Our stay in Bermuda

Our Stay in Bermuda

Our stay in Bermuda has been wonderful. Bermuda is such a beautiful place. It isn't a nation, actually a territory of the U.K., but it still has a unique atmosphere. Our stay could have been better, but I have still really enjoyed it. We got to see the town of St. Georges, the city of Hamilton, the Royal Navy Dockyard, the tall ships, and a whole lot more. St. Georges is a very nice, quiet little town, Hamilton is a small yet busy city, and the tall ships were an absolutely wonderful sight to see. Tall ships are what we call the old, multi-masted sailing ships. We saw the H.M.S. Bounty several times, as well as an old Man-o-War with gun ports running all along the sides. Also, as the Pride of Baltimore left St. Georges Harbour, it fired off one of it's port cannons, making a huge racket and releasing a cloud of white powder smoke. I have had a lot of fun in Bermuda, and I don't look forward to leaving it.

Last day in Bermuda

Well, this is the last day in Bermuda. Today we dropped off Mommy at the airport. Tomorrow we are leaving. If I said that in front of Orion, he would say something like "We wheel leeeeeeeve, in a huffffffff!" or something like that (probably not). I wonder what the Azores are like…

Bermuda at last

Bermuda at Last

After a full week at sea, we have finally reached our destination: Bermuda. This is a beautiful place, and has a very peaceful anchorage. Two days ago we got up as usual, had breakfast, and come up on deck to see a small island off the port bow. Later that day we got on our VHF and called Bermuda Radio, the local radio station in St. George's Harbor. We got ourselves cleared to the customs and immigration dock, then signed off. That evening we entered the harbor and tied up at the customs dock. It took about an hour to clear customs, and they confiscated our flare pistols. They will give them back when we leave, but it was quite a surprise to have to leave our flare pistols there for the duration of our stay. We left the customs dock just as another boat came in, and anchored out in the harbor. We then shut down the engine and went to bed. The next day, we hoisted the dinghy off the deck and into the water. We attached the outboard motor and went ashore. When we got to the waterfront we found that there was some kind of festivity going on. Upon further observation we discovered that the locals were racing small rubber duckies under a bridge and betting on which one will come under first. All the duckies have numbers on them, so they can tell which is which. We explored the town, found out where everything is, and went to the White Horse Tavern. I had a ginger beer for the first time since last month, which tasted very good, and my brother had one too. The adults all had alcoholic drinks. We went back to the boat and got a good night's rest. We woke up the next day to splashing sounds. We went up top to see a whole school of large fish racing around and splashing occasionally. We thought that they might be having fun, and I personally agree. We took Mr. Denis and Mr. Peter (our crew members) to the shore, where they could catch a bus to the airport. Later that day we picked up a new crew member to show her the boat. It seems that we will have at least one very pleasant crew member on the way to the Azores. So far, Bermuda has been a lot of fun.

Here!

Well, we are finally here at Bermuda and we have gone on the island several times now. When we went to custums, we hit the dock hard and almost popped the fenders. I think we damaged the dock as well. The first time we went on the island, we went to this place called The White Horse Tavern. There were no SUVs, and you drive on the left side of the road (the steering wheel was on the right side). We looked for a place that had SIM cards went to an internet café; saw the tall ships that were there, and on the next day, there was this show in which this woman accused of gossiping keeps getting dunk in the harbor with this contraption that looked like a catapult. Oh, and about the tall ships: the HMS Bounty came in and all of them had modern-day technology and a motor. Bermuda is fun, and I can't wait for the other stops.

Passage to Bermuda

At Sea

As we set out on our two-year voyage, I couldn't help but think that this will be the last time I see the United States for two whole years. We had taken a last look around the house, and had prepared the boat for sea. Mr. Denis and Mr. Peter (our crew members) had come on board, and we had left the marina without incident. We passed Fernandina Harbor Marina and headed out the St. Mary's Entrance. The water was much calmer than the Bahamas trip had been, and I barely got seasick at all. The next day however, I got seasick. We were sailing along just fine, and then I started to feel queasy. Then I started to feel really queasy. Eventually it calmed down , but for the first few days, I didn't feel so good. For the first four days, the seas were rather calm, and the wind was barely enough to sail by. I thought I had gotten my sea legs I that time, but I was proven wrong on the fifth day. Yep, I got seasick again. To make all things worse, the seas got pretty rough on the fifth day, and the wind rose to 30 knots, whipping up the seas. The boat was constantly on an at least ten degree heel, sometimes reaching a 20 degree one on a big roll. We were slammed from side to side in our bunks, making it almost impossible to go to sleep. We managed though, and the boat performed almost perfectly. It seems that all our
