I've never seen a turtle in the wild before until Soiunon. We saw what looked like a rock at first, but then it came out of its shell. We looked at it for a while, then left. Later, it was gone. &%$! But then we saw it on the other side of the path. They can be faster then you think.

Cape Sounion

Yet another temple today, this one's dedicated to Poseidon. It is
also the biggest temple purely dedicated to Poseidon, most others are
shared with another god. The ruins are located at the top of a tall hill
on the point of Cape Sounion. This is the place that my dad always meant
to go to on his first sailing trip with the boat also called Sounion. It
was commissioned to be built by a man who named her after the cape that
he wanted to see in here. Unfortunately he became sick before he could
make the trip. Her second owner never took her farther than the Bahamas.
My dad bought her from him and sailed her almost there, but had to stop
in Spain for lack of time. Now he's come to the place where he always
meant to go in his former boat.

I fixed something, but Daddy broke something else.

I fixed something,

Yes, I know that blogs are supposed to show current events, but sometimes you have to post late. Well, I was doing what I like to do; take stuff apart to find out how they work. Or how they're supposed to work. In that case they don't work, and I try to fix them. Well, the thing I was taking apart didn't work. It happened to be the solenoid for our windlass motor. The first thing I said as I was taking off the top was "Daddy, I think I know what the problem is.". The spring that was above the plunger was askew; creating a short circuit that let a tiny trickle of power through. It wasn't anough to activate the plunger (couldn't go up anyway because the spring was put in wrong), but It also couldn't turn the motor. Well, I put it back together CORRECTLY and today, we tested it using the power going to the engine, and it worked. It happened to be so that the same day the solenoid that we replaced with the "broken" one wasn't working, so we used the same test as before on it, and it worked. It was actually bad connections on the wiring. @#$%&!

But Daddy broke something else.

We dragged during the night, so we re-anchored. When I was backing down an it (Daddy let me), the line going to the thermometer-which was for some reason was in the water-started shaking. I pulled on it, but it wouldn't come up. I immediately put the boat into neutral (You other sailors out there reading this will know why; the thermometer was stuck in the propeller.). When I told Daddy about it he pulled it out, and admitted that he forgot to take it out. Only a shattered bit of plastic was left on the end. Our second-to-last thermometer had been smashed by the propeller. @#$%&! again!

Delphi

If you have never been to Delphi, you should definitely make plans for
going someday. We went there the day before yesterday, and it still
boggles my mind. It was absolutely amazing. To think that these huge
stone structures had been there for over 2000 years! The people who
built these must have been very determined and patient to be able to
erect this place ever so slowly over decades of hard labor. The
sanctuary of Apollo must have been an awesome sight all those hundreds
of years ago. I really wish I could have seen it. However, there are
several things that I learned about while I was there. One was that the
Oracle of Delphi was actually in the Temple of Apollo, not in it's own
special structure. Also, the common idea that the Oracle was a circular
building with many pillars around the outside is wrong. That is the
Tholos in the Sanctuary of Athena. Another interesting tidbit is that in
addition to being delirious off of the gasses of the Oracle, the Oracles
themselves were also chewing up fresh bay leaves. This leaves some
question as to the accuracy of their predictions. A strange test was
also performed to determine whether the gods were willing to give the
Oracle predictions. A goat was sacrificed, but cold water was poured on
the goat right before. If the goat shivered, the gods were willing. I
know, that means that the gods were willing pretty much every day,
except if they had a pretty hardy goat. I don't know where they
sacrificed the goat, the Temple was pretty collapsed. I had a great time
at Delphi, and look forwards to a great time in Athens.

Nafpaktos-*boop* or no *boop*?

The castle/fortress at Nafpaktos is very protective, as now it is overgrown in weeds. To get there you need to go up a long trail that is at a forty-degree angle. This seems like a lot of trouble, and it is, but it depends on your point of view. If you like staying at home and doing what you like every day, then it's a *boop* waste of your *boop* time. But if you're like my dad, you think that it's a very good way of spending your otherwise *boop* day. If you're like me, you hope that you get a *boop* good rest at the end. And hope that it's a *boop* good thing that you're going to see. Anyway, apparently the Turkish fleet assembled in the harbor right below it. And it's tiny! If you're going to go to Greece anytime soon (which you probably won't) you should visit Nafpaktos.

Hot-Wiring the Engine

That was what we were forced to do when my brother tried to
start the motor and it failed to do anything. We were at sea, getting
ready to enter a harbor and anchor. We rushed downstairs and opened the
engine access port in the head. We got out a big screwdriver to jump the
solenoid that controlled the starter motor. We took one look at it and
then got worried: we had no idea which of the many terminals we needed
to jump! My dad took a picture of it with his Blackberry and e-mailed a
mechanic shop in Gibraltar asking what to do. They gave him some
step-by-step instructions on how to properly jump it. He tried it, and
the motor roared to life at last. Since then we have simply jumped the
solenoid whenever we need the engine. Hopefully we will be able to fix
this problem without undue delay.

Cats of Ithaka

I have always liked cats. Yet in Italy there weren't many cats. Here, however cats are plentiful. I have just seen more than ten cats; all sizes. The dog population her isn't too big though. This is just in a small island. I am trying to imagine Athens. And the mainland. Could anyone please put a comment about the dog and cat population in America?

Getting out

The channel is dredged. Finally. The digging machines have made the channel deep enough and wide enough for Juno to get through. But only barely. We got over the bottom with only inches to spare. At one point, we didn't have anything to spare at all, bumping the keel on the sandy bottom. It was one of the most stressful experiences of my life. Early in the morning we took the dinghy out into the channel with a depth sounder and found that there was a safe path out to sea. We hurried back to the boat and made preparations to leave, informing our neighbors that we would be running aground shortly and would need their help (and dinghy motors) to get back off. We pulled the dinghy up onto the deck and made the boat ready for sea. Then we cast off the dock lines and headed for the channel. The main depth sounder reported depths nearer and nearer the keel as we drew closer to the blue water ahead. Then, the depth reached 1.6 meters, the exact distance from the waterline to the keel. The boat lurched forwards and tilted as though going over a speed bump. My dad opened the engine throttle, seeing that the bow was already surrounded by blue. We surged forwards and finally shot clear of the shallow water into the open sea. Now we are in the port of Vathi on the Greek island of Ithaca. We have broken free of the marina of Sibari at last.

From a great height

And distance, we can see Juno has not dragged anchor. Yet.
