Stormy morning in Mahon

Juno's crew is REALLY glad they anticipated the 180 wind shift and moved the anchor spot. Now all we need is for the anchor to actually reset itself in this new direction. . .

Seen this? Thought not.

Have you seen a monolith? I have. today in fact. Don't act all surprised about it. I mean, I've seen a lot of things already. So what's a stone age relic between friends? But I must admit, it's amazing how the cave men could stack 'em. There was also this stone dome thing, and the top is hollowed out. And the others are yet to see. I mean that the same site has more, and they are digging it up. You can come there later.

Did you know that Ibiza city was founded 2,600 years ago by the Phoenicians? Well, we visited there today, and I tell you, IT IS AMAZING! We went into this castle that was built by the Moors 1,000 years ago, but it was converted into a cathedral by the Spaniards 700 years ago. There is also a museum about archeology there and it is full of stuff like coins and clay vessels. It was a single chance in a lifetime, and we took it.

Ronda

Ronda
Until now, I have never been on a train. I went onto a train that led to Ronda. That is a city in Spain. But we didn't do much there. But one thing I did was find pao mier. It was different. I thought that pao mier was this solid thing. It is supposed to be a flaky thing. But I like it like the solid thing. There was also an old bridge. I don't mean a old bridge, I mean an old bridge. It went across this huge gorge. Not much else happened. On the train ride back, I read "Island of the Blue Dolphins" to entertain myself. Oh, and on the way back, when we passed through customs, we were held back because of the police inspecting this supposed bomb on the runway (you have to cross it).

A trip to Ronda

Our Stay in Bermuda

Our stay in Bermuda has been wonderful. Bermuda is such a beautiful place. It isn't a nation, actually a territory of the U.K., but it still has a unique atmosphere. Our stay could have been better, but I have still really enjoyed it. We got to see the town of St. Georges, the city of Hamilton, the Royal Navy Dockyard, the tall ships, and a whole lot more. St. Georges is a very nice, quiet little town, Hamilton is a small yet busy city, and the tall ships were an absolutely wonderful sight to see. Tall ships are what we call the old, multi-masted sailing ships. We saw the H.M.S. Bounty several times, as well as an old Man-o-War with gun ports running all along the sides. Also, as the Pride of Baltimore left St. Georges Harbour, it fired off one of it's port cannons, making a huge racket and releasing a cloud of white powder smoke. I have had a lot of fun in Bermuda, and I don't look forward to leaving it.

Exploring Gib -- pt 2

Gibraltar

Gibraltar has been one of the most amazing places I have ever been. On one side are the Straits of Gibraltar, on the other is the Rock of Gibraltar. A few days ago we arrived here after going through the Straits, today we just finished climbing around the Rock. Over the last few days we have mainly been fixing the boat, but today we explored the Rock. When we woke up this morning we had a brief breakfast, then headed out into the Old Town part of Gibraltar. We soon reached the cable car base station and purchased tickets. We got on board and the cable car started towards the top. We soon had an amazing view of the city. We also saw some of the monkeys that the Rock is home to. At the top, the view was fantastic. We started walking towards the north side of the rock, but we soon got lost. We eventually found our way again, but at the expense of most of the day. We saw the incredible caves that were dug into the Rock for shelter during sieges. Another interesting place was the Moorish Castle, and of course the monkeys were sighted everywhere. We will come here again when we leave the Mediterranean, but I will always remember this first visit.

Exploring Gib -- pt 1

The Rock [of Gibraltar]

The Rock of Gibraltar is very amazing! This is not a little stone I am talking about. This is a BIG, HUGE, and BIGGER, limestone rock. That is strange because that is a sedimentary rock instead of a metamorphic rock. But it doesn't smell like limestone. That is also strange. The most amazing things are the tunnels used in World War II and The Great Siege. They had cannons that were up to the holes that point out of The Rock. Did I tell you that they are inside of the rock? We also went on a cable car that went to the top. This is a cable car that is on tracks that are in the air. It was a very smooth trip. We saw monkeys from the cable car too! We saw them again when we went to this one place where they hung out. We wandered around a lot. I am typing this when we just got back down from The Rock. I hope it will be just as much fun when we come back!

Hand steering in a gale

Hand-Steering in a Gale

Perhaps the greatest challenge on this boat is hand-steering in a gale with the wind and waves on the quarter. This means that the wind is blowing at a 20-50 degree angle to the stern on one side. Each wave that comes throws the stern violently to one side, then once it's past, the stern slides back to its original position. Usually the Monitor self-steering gear would keep the stern's motion in check, but the Monitor had failed some hours before. Therefore we had to hand-steer, which is the most stressful job you can find on a boat. We had to anticipate the stern's motion before the wave hit, and move the wheel to compensate. It was no fun at all. I had to literally wrestle the wheel to either side because of the resistance that the water exerted on the rudder. Within minutes, I was exhausted. Hopefully the Monitor will be fixed soon, and we will never have to go through that again.

-- By Orion

Eds Note: The Monitor was successfully repaired while at anchor in Cadiz Bay, where Juno hid from ANOTHER gale that blowing through the Strait of Gibraltar.
